READ THE FINAL CONFERENCE REPORT: RE-ENGAGING EUROPE WITH ASIA
The Europe-Asia Policy Forum (EUforAsia) has been set up to improve Europe's understanding of Asia and to provide a growing rapport between the two regions. It is based on an extensive academic network of institutes, universities and think tanks in both Europe and Asia. Supported by the European Commission, EUforAsia will address policy issues of concern both to the EU and to Asia for a three-year period, from 2009 to 2011.
An EU-Asia Partnership
EUforAsia will be managed by four partners, each with a long experience in the field of Asian Studies and Europe-Asia relations. They are the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF, Singapore), the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA, Singapore), the European Policy Centre (EPC, Brussels), and the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS, Leiden, the Netherlands). The EUforAsia office has been set up in Brussels.
Aims and Objectives
By strengthening knowledge and understanding of EU-Asia relations, EUforAsia will contribute to EU policy formulation towards Asia. Using its extensive networks in Europe and Asia, decision-makers in the EU Institutions and Member States will be brought together with Asian diplomats, European and Asian business and trade union representatives, leading academics, representatives of civil society and the media and other stakeholders interested in Asian issues in general. EUforAsia will also enhance Europe's awareness of Asian political, economic and social developments and regional processes and mechanisms.
Activities
EUforAsia will consist of three principal actions:
- The EUforAsia website, an internet forum on academic research and exchanges on Asia issues to enhance communication and dissemination of European expertise, which will become the leading online provider of information about Asia and EU-Asia relations;
- The EUforAsia Brussels Briefings, eight discussion seminars each year on important topical Asian issues;
- The EUforAsia Workshops and Round-Table Conferences, taking place in various venues in Europe and Asia, and dealing with the three following themes:
- The Asia-Europe Environment Forum, a multi-stakeholder debate on sustainable development issues in Asia and Europe, such as climate change, water, pollution and health;
- The Regional Integration Series analysing developments in regional integration in Asia and Europe;
- The Asia Round-table on Conflict Management, an expert policy dialogue on Europe-Asia cooperation on governance and conflict management.
