The Asian development model and Africa: Eastern lessons for African challenges?

Date: Tue, 07/06/2011 - 15:00 - 16:30

The European Policy Centre is delighted to invite you to an EU for Asia Brussels Briefing on The Asian development model and Africa: Eastern lessons for African challenges? on Tuesday 7 June.

In the aftermath of the debilitating financial crisis and the subsequent instability, the Western economic model has lost out in attractiveness to the successful Asian development model. East Asian and Southeast Asian countries have continued their extraordinary growth performances uninterruptedly, which is why Africa is looking more and more to the East in its search for a new development paradigm to deal with its persistent economic challenges. This evolution also has a direct impact on EU development policy.

To examine the relevance of the Asian experience for African development, this Briefing will discuss how East Asian best practice can prove instructive for policy challenges and structural problems in Africa. How important is state-driven development as opposed to a market-led approach? Could Asian models for economic governance and strong institutions be emulated by African countries? How should we see the role of foreign assistance and what lessons can be drawn for the EU’s development agenda?

These issues will be discussed by Dr Obadiah Mailafia, Head of Cabinet, Secretariat for ACP states and former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr David Henley, Professor in comparative Asian and African development, University of Leiden, Klaus Rudischhauser, Director for ACP-General Affairs, DG DEVCO, European Commission, and Dr Machiko Nissanke, Professor of economics, School of Oriental and African Studies. EPC Chief Executive Hans Martens will chair the meeting.
