After the keynote speeches, a panel composed of Asian and European academics and policymakers will explore ways of modernizing world governance structures to reflect changing global realities, including the rise of Asia. The meeting will be followed by a "walking sandwich lunch". Speakers yet to be announced.
The economic crisis has transformed global governance structures and prompted recognition that multilateral institutions must reflect a new rapidly-changing and interdependent world environment. The crisis has also highlighted the importance of improving global coordination to tackle global challenges. This is especially true for Europe, with the largest internal market, and Asia, the economic region with the most continued growth rates in recent years. The need for such closer Asia-Europe cooperation and calls from many Asian countries for a stronger voice and representation in international financial and economic organization will also be a key question at the ASEM summit to be held in Brussels on October 4-5.
